Pantani’s Alpe d’Huez ascent Record still up.

Pantani’s Alpe d’Huez ascent Record still up.

Looking at the chart below its possible to see that, although Fausto Coppi rode his bike in a completely different generation to the rest of these champions he is still up there with the best in ascents of Alpe d’Huez. That is why he is the “champion of champions”.

Fastest Alpe d’Huez ascents
The climb has been timed since 1994 so earlier times are subject to discussion. From 1994 to 1997 the climb was timed from 14.5 km from the finish. Since 1999 photo-finish has been used from 14 km. Other times have been taken 13.8 km from the summit, which is the start of the climb. Others have been taken from the junction 700m from the start.
These variations have led to a debate. Pantani’s 37m 35s has been cited by Procycling and World Cycling Productions, publisher of Tour de France DVDs, and by Cycle Sport.

In a biography of Pantani, Matt Rendell notes Pantani at: 1994 – 38m 0s; 1995 – 38m 4s; 1997 – 37m 35s.

The Alpe tourist association describes the climb as 14.454 km and lists Pantani’s 37m 35s (23.08 km/h) as the record.

Other sources give Pantani’s times from 1994, 1995 and 1997 as the fastest, based on timings adjusted for the 13.8 km. Such sources list Pantani’s time in 1995 as the record at 36m 40s. In Blazing Saddles, Rendell has changed his view and listed it as 36m 50s as does CyclingNews. Second, third, and fourth fastest are Pantani in 1997 (36m 5s), Pantani in 1994 (37m 15s) and Jan Ullrich in 1997 (37m 30s). Armstrong’s time in 2004 (37m 36s) makes him fifth fastest, highlighting how the 1990s had faster ascents than other eras.
A number of cycling publications cite times prior to 1994, although distances are typically not included, making comparisons difficult. Coppi has been listed with 45m 22s for 1952.
In the 1980s Gert-Jan Theunisse, Pedro Delgado, Luis Herrera, and Laurent Fignon rode in times stated to be faster than Coppi’s, but still not breaking 40m. Greg Lemond and Bernard Hinault have been reported as having the times of 48m 0s in 1986.
It was not until Gianni Bugno and Miguel Indurain in 1991, that times faster than 40m were reported, including in the 39m range for Bjarne Riis in 1995 and Richard Virenque in 1997. For 2006, Floyd Landis was listed at 38’34″ and Andreas Kloden at 38m 35s.
Procycling listed Fränk Schleck in 2006 as 40m 46s, the first in more than 40 minutes since 1994.

Annotations: Fausto Coppi rodes a Bianchi steel bicycle on difficult streets paths. Pantani rodes a Bianchi alloy bicycle, after 1995 all bikes were made in carbon fiber.

British Cycling move to aid GB cycling team

Guardate che roba!

Prompted by its unprecedented growth, British Cycling is temporarily moving some of its operations out of the Manchester Velodrome to a nearby business park – so the GB cycling team can concentrate on vital preparations for London 2012.

All departments apart from the GB Cycling Team will relocate to a temporary office for 18 months, enabling GB Cycling Team coaches, athletes and support staff to optimize the space within at the Manchester Velodrome and create a world-class environment for elite performance (Ambiente e infrastrutture Internazionali d’elite) as they prepare for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The entire British Cycling operation will be reunited in 2011 when the National Indoor BMX Centre (Centro Indoor di BMX Nazionale !) is completed next to the Manchester Velodrome, with new purpose built British Cycling offices linking the two venues.

This improved National Cycling Centre will benefit from new public spaces and outdoor freestyle cycling areas to form one of the UK’s first Veloparks. (Programma nazionale dei Veloparks pubblici).

When complete, the National Indoor BMX Centre, the world’s first purpose built indoor BMX track(prima pista mondiale coperta BMX) , will help further integrate the GB Cycling Team and improve preparations for London 2012.

Capable of seating 2,000 spectators, it will help bring major cycling events to the city and open its doors to local schools, clubs and community. Subject to funding and planning approval, work on the scheme will start at the beginning of 2010.

To help the transition, the following British Cycling departments will be temporarily relocated: Cycle Sport and Membership; Coaching, Education and Development; Recreation and Partnerships; Marketing and Communications; Corporate Services and Facilities.

Ian Drake, CEO at British Cycling said: “This temporary move will enable the GB Cycling Team to expand within the Manchester Velodrome and take full advantage of this superb training facility, aiding athlete preparations for London 2012.

“Today we employ over 200 staff and the organisation is continuing to grow as we expand into new areas such as recreational cycling. The move will enable us to meet the needs of our staff and ensure that we can operate effectively until our new offices are built at the heart of the National Cycling Centre.

“The National Indoor BMX Centre is yet another ambitious project that will help assert Britain as the number one cycling nation in the world. Its development will be possible thanks to the exceptional support of our partners – Manchester City Council, New East Manchester and Sport England – who share our vision to turn Britain into a cycling nation.”

There will be no change of address for British Cycling, as all post will be re-directed to the nearby office and all phone numbers will remain the same. Some disruption to e-mail and phone lines may occur on Friday 16 October. For full contact details visit www.britishcycling.org.uk.

Olympic Talent Team Programme

If you are a youth rider ambitious for success in any Olympic discipline in the sport of cycling, and you think you have what it takes to make it to the Olympic podium, then the Olympic Talent Programme would like to hear from you.

The Talent Programme is regionally based for both coaches and riders. Talent Programme riders are typically aged from 13 to 17 years old, and they all have the ambition of making it onto an Olympic podium . The Talent Programme’s coaches have the skill, enthusiasm, imagination and commitment to help to develop riders with the goal of making them ready for the next step of the pathway; the Olympic Development Programme.

What does the Talent Programme offer?
The Talent Programme coaches are amongst the best in the country, with the skills and experience to be able to identify the areas where a young rider most needs to improve to challenge for the top. The Talent Programme coaches are well placed to provide opportunities and coaching support for riders to then develop in those areas.

The Talent Programme coaches know exactly what the coaches in the older age group programmes (Olympic Development Programme, Olympic Academy Programme) are looking for from a young rider and are well placed to assist a rider in gaining the skills & fitness required to compete for a place in the next step to the Olympic podium.

Talent Programme riders are identifed through talent spotting at regional and national competition (Selezione Nazionale a partire sino dai 13 ANNI !), and via referral through our excellent Go-Ride clubs and qualified club coaches – visit the Club Finder section of this site, and click on the Go-Ride button for your local Go-Ride club.

Great Britain Cycling Team FAQs
What does being in one of the Squads involve?
The answer to this is very much age dependant.

In the Talent Programme from 13 to 16 years old, you will be assigned a coach who will prescribe training and racing to fit around your education. You’ll need to commit to completing and returning a training diary and attending approximately 4 camps of 4 to 7 days during the year (in school holiday time). Opportunities may also arise to race overseas. (…pure all’estero !).

In the Olympic Development Programme for junior riders, 16 to 18 years old, you will be coached by a discipline specific coach, again you’ll have a training and racing schedule set around your educational needs, and need to commit to completing and returning regular training diaries. Residential camps are held in school holidays, and there are opportunities to represent Great Britain internationally

In the U23 Academy Programme riders normally commit to full time residential focussed training. Many of the disciplines have their base in Manchester, with the men’s road riders also having a summer base in Italy. Riders still completing A levels can be considered, and a non-residential programme can in some circumstances be put in place by the Academy coach.

In the Podium Programme, riders receive all the coaching, equipment, clothing needed to be a professional rider, racing predominantly internationally, but living independently and responsible for their own training programmes.

I was wondering if there was a junior GB team and how I could join?
The Olympic Development Programme aims to develop junior riders to the level where they will be competitive internationally. Each year European Championships and / or World Championships teams are selected to represent Great Britain on merit. Selection for such teams is carried out looking at riders prowess in competition – National series events, Revolution events etc.
